Announced in June, macOS Sonoma will be released only in the fall. But if you can't wait to try out interactive desktop widgets, game mode and other features right now, then you can install the beta version of the OS.

1. Check the compatibility

Apple always tries to provide the widest possible support for devices, and macOS Sonoma is no exception. The new OS will work on all relatively modern Macs. However, just in case, check if your gadget is on the list:

iMac 2019 and newer;
iMac Pro 2017;
MacBook Air 2018 and newer;
MacBook Pro 2018 and newer;
Mac Pro 2019 and later;
Mac Studio 2022;
Mac Mini 2018 and newer.

2. Make a backup copy

The new macOS is still at an early stage of development and contains bugs that are sure to manifest themselves during operation. Therefore, in order not to lose important data, be sure to make a backup copy of the system in Time Machine.

To do this:

Connect the backup disk.
Go to "Settings" → "Basic" → Time Machine.
Select the disk, right-click and click "Create a backup on Time Machine now".
Wait for the copying process to complete.

3. Join the beta testing program

To download the software, which is in beta testing, you need to become a member of the Apple Developer program. It will be enough to log in using your account Apple ID — you do not have to buy a membership.

Proceed as follows:

Download the Apple Developer app from the link above and run it.
Click on "Account" and log in to the current account that is already in use on the Mac, or another one.

4. Enable the upgrade to beta versions

By default, the OS is not updated to beta versions, so you need to force this feature to be enabled in the settings so that the system "sees" macOS Sonoma.

Go to Settings → General → Software Update.
Click on the i icon in the "Beta Updates" line and select macOS Sonoma Developer Beta.

5. Install macOS Sonoma

Now all that remains is to install an update that will update the system to macOS Sonoma. Keep in mind that you will need at least 14 GB of free disk space.

In the "General" → "Software Update" section, wait for the Mac to check for updates. You may have to close Settings or restart your computer.
When macOS Sonoma is detected, click "Update Now", agree to the terms of use and enter your password.
Wait for the download to finish. After that, the Mac will reboot and the standard installation will begin.
