How to get rid of TV addiction

In our last article on television, we tried to make quite convincing arguments against modern television. The topic turned out to be interesting and caused a heated discussion. If you agree in many ways that an excessive fascination with watching TV shows has a negative effect on your life, then it's time to move on to practical actions.

I want to make a reservation right away that this article is not intended for everyone. If you enjoy watching TV and don't see anything wrong with it at all, then don't waste time reading. If you have been ignoring the TV for a long time and can safely do without a blue screen for weeks, then this article is also fortunately not for you. This text can be useful only to those readers who not only spend a significant part of their time watching TV, but also realize that this poses some kind of problem.

1. Changing perception

The very first step that needs to be taken on the way to change is to change our attitude to the subject of excessive attachment. The best way to do this is to deliberately create such conditions for yourself when the TV will be completely inaccessible to you. Go to the mountains for a week, go to your grandmother's village or to another country with an unfamiliar language. Returning back and turning on the box out of habit, you will surely catch yourself thinking: What are these talking heads talking about so seriously?», «Why are these painted dolls laughing and rejoicing in the studio?», « What is it all about?».

If you do not have the opportunity right now to get away to a lost taiga corner or a mountain monastery, then you can use the advice of Viktor Pelevin. 2. Finding a replacement

If the TV used to be of great importance in your life, then if you refuse it, you will have a feeling of emptiness and boredom. This void must be filled. At the same time, it is important that the activity you have chosen is not a tribute to fashion or imposed by someone else's advice. Do what you are really interested in, what you have been dreaming about for so long, but put off for later.

Start your own business. Do you have ideas, but there was no time to implement them? Here's the time — do it!

Communicate. If you haven't talked to friends for a long time and haven't spent much time with your family, then this is a great opportunity to reconnect.

Take care of yourself. The main excuse from playing sports will not pass now. The free time is quite enough for jogging, gym classes, swimming pool and so on.

A new hobby. Learn a new language, do needlework, sign up for dancing — in any case, it will be more useful than staring into a box.

3. Gradually reducing the time

It is clear that it is not so easy to give up a habit that has been ingrained for many years at one moment. Therefore, it is worth trying the method of gradually reducing the time in front of the blue screen. At the same time, I am not talking about abstract « a little less or more », but completely concrete measures. Just take a watch and cut off 10 minutes of your TV time every day.

4. Don't start watching new TV series

TV series are one of the most powerful television weapons, which are really not easy to defeat. Let me remind you that behind each such product is the work of not only talented actors, screenwriters and directors, but also the efforts of professional psychologists, marketers and sociologists aimed at getting you hooked and not letting you out. If you can't get rid of the temptation to find out how it all ended, then try to watch the episodes on the record, this will at least save you advertising time.

And in no case do not start watching new TV series or TV shows! Believe me, I have personally seen quite decent people who have not watched a single episode of Dr. House. And their life didn't get any worse from this. :)

5. Remove the digital TV set-top boxes from the house, cut the antenna cable and do not renew your subscription to cable channels

One day you will come to this decision. Why would you spend money on shows that you don't watch anyway? It's just that you don't need it. Congratulations, you're free.
