The Windows operating system has never supported the RAR and 7z archive formats by default — users always had to download additional software to work with them. But very soon this gap will be eliminated in Windows 11.

The appearance of support for these formats in the current Microsoft system was announced by Product Director Panos Panay:

We have added built-in support for additional archive formats, including tar, 7-zip, RAR, gz and many others, using the libarchive open source project. Now you can improve the performance of archiving functions during compression in Windows.

Panay added that native support for these formats should be expected on all Windows 11 PCs in the "near future." And testing starts this week.
