I didn't think that a free program would have such an excellent set of features. Media Coder can encode video and audio files from one format to another. It copes with this task especially well when it comes to compressing video files for playback on mobile devices, smartphones, communicators, PDAs, PSP, iPods.
You can set all the transcoding parameters yourself (there are a lot of them and they control all the characteristics of the encoded stream), however, I used the preset schemes in the program, which gave a very good result. Moreover, there are a number of modifications of the program focused on a particular mobile device: MediaCoder PSP Edition, MediaCoder MP3/MP4 Player Edition, MediaCoder Mobile Phone Edition, MediaCoder Audio Edition. It is not difficult to guess that each of the options is optimized for its own tasks. Supported audio formats: MP3, Vorbis, AAC, AAC+, AAC+v2, MusePack, Speex, AMR, WMA, RealAudio, mp3PRO, FLAC, WavPack, Monkey’s Audio, OptimFROG, AAC Lossless, WMA Lossless, WAV/PCM, CUE Sheet, CD Audio. Supported video formats: AVI, MPEG/VOB, Matroska, MP4, ASF, Quicktime, H.264, Xvid, MPEG 1/2/4, Theora, Flash Video, Windows Media Video. A very impressive list for a free program, isn't it? The program encodes both one file and a list, and it is possible to set individual settings for encoding each of the streams. Any settings that you need to use in the future can be saved to profiles for future use.
I really liked the program, now I am happy to use it to convert videos for my smartphone. The program, as I mentioned, is free, with open source code, works under Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista, there is optimization for core-duo processors, however, you can also download optimized versions for AMD or INTEL. The developers also write about the performance of the program under Wine in Mac OS and Linux. Do not forget about the additional codecs collected by the creators of the program in one Extra Codecs Pack.
