1. Find motivation

Being motivated doesn't mean feeling elated or excited. Motivation is just one or more reasons why you perform an action. And these reasons must be found.

Maybe you decide to do something because:

  • this will reduce stress;
  • will benefit those you care about;
  • will allow you to save money or earn more;
  • will help to avoid negative consequences;
  • will make you happy with yourself;
  • will clear your mind.

Time management consultant, author Elizabeth Grace Saunders advises E. G. Saunders. How to Motivate Yourself to Do Things You Don’t Want to Do / Harvard Business Review think something like this: "I don't want to do this. But if I overdo myself, I will improve my financial situation both now and in the future."

Remember that you can always find a reason to move forward. The main thing is to focus on the result, and not to get hung up on the task itself.

2. Don't let emotions take over

There are usually no physical obstacles to go for a run, complete a major project at work, or finally finish reading a book. We just don't want to do it and let negative emotions ruin our plans.

But emotions can and should be controlled. One way to do this is meditation. It will help you overcome the mental barriers that you have built in front of yourself.

3. Structure the process

Chaos will not help to complete an unpleasant task. Therefore, it is very important to make the process clear and understandable. The following tips will come to the rescue.

Divide the task into steps

Often the tasks we need to complete seem so difficult and overwhelming that we don't know where to start. When this happens, we do nothing and achieve nothing.

Psychologist Carol Morgan advises C. Morgan. 10 Tips on How to Do Something You Don’t Want to Do / Lifehack in such cases, think about the fact that your task is just a sequence of several simple steps. This will help you understand from which side to approach the case that you are resisting.

Psychologist.

At first, writing a dissertation of several hundred pages seemed impossible to me. But once I rethought everything and thought of it as a few shorter written works put together, things didn't get too bad.

Don't try to do everything in one go

Imagine that you need to clear the blockage on the balcony or in the garage. This does not mean that everything needs to be done in one sitting. Any step on the way to the goal is already progress.

Do not raise the bar. To solve the problem, it may be enough to perform one action per week.

Set aside a certain amount of time for tasks

Take your time, give yourself time to get the job done properly. But do not relax too much, and even more so do not postpone until the last moment, otherwise you will have to do everything at once , and this will only increase stress.

Also, don't let any step take up too much time. For example, you can give him 10 minutes a day, and then move on to other things if you wish.

Set priorities

After you break down your task into several steps, arrange them in order of importance. Which one is urgent, and which one can be left for later? For example, if you have postponed paying bills, first deal with those that threaten you with fines in case of delay.

Plan

Record the steps in a paper or digital calendar. So at any time you will be able to see what tasks you have planned for a particular day, prepare for them and finally complete them.

And when you mark tasks as done, you will feel a surge of motivation. According to Carol Morgan, this will help you stay on track while you learn to do what you don't want to do.

4. Involve other people

Man is a social being, and sometimes nothing inspires as much as joint work. Delegate one of the steps to someone, team up with someone to solve a problem, or simply surround yourself with people who also work. For example, go to the library or another place with a working atmosphere to get an extra portion of motivation.

5. Combine business with pleasure

To improve your mood and increase motivation, a combination of necessary activities with relaxing ones will help. Allow yourself to complete a difficult task, say, writing an essay or preparing a presentation, in a place that you like — in a cozy coffee shop or outdoors in the park, weather permitting.

You can also try layering tasks on top of each other. Listen to music or podcast while you are preparing a workplace or doing something that does not require significant concentration.

6. Reward yourself

Pleasures can serve as a motivator. Try to stay productive by working for a small reward. Blogger and career consultant Sarah Landrum offers S. Landrum. How To Motivate Yourself To Power Through Tasks You Don’t Want To Do / Forbes think of it as a kind of bribe. You decide which promotion is best suited. Maybe you will allow yourself lunch at your favorite cafe at the end of the week if you meet all the deadlines. Or you will save a small amount after each successfully completed step and later reward yourself with a pleasant purchase.
