12 new features iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma will receive only new devices

New versions of Apple's operating systems are expected to be released in the fall, including iOS and iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10 and tvOS 17. Not all devices will receive these updates, but even if your gadget is in the list of compatible devices, it is not a fact that all new functions will be available to it.

Here are the features of the new operating systems that will not be available on older devices, according to information from the Apple website.

  • Hand gesture reactions. In iOS 17, during FaceTime video calls, the user will be able to make hand gestures to launch 3D animations of reactions. Since this is augmented reality, it will not work with all processors: you need at least A14 Bionic (that is, iPhone 12 and newer).
  • More accurate auto-correction. In addition to the improved operation of the function itself, iOS 17 will underline the corrected word for a few seconds so that the user can quickly undo the correction and leave what he originally wrote. In English, French and Spanish, the new auto-correction will only work on iPhone 12 and newer, whereas other supported languages do not have this limitation.
  • Voice acting on hover. A new universal access feature that will allow visually impaired people to interact with objects that have text on them. But the function only works if there is a LiDAR sensor — which means it is compatible only with iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro and their Max versions.

  • Hand gesture reactions. As with iOS, some older tablets won't get this option. These are the iPad mini 5, the 11-inch iPad Pro (second generation and older), the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (fourth generation and older), and the basic iPad (ninth generation and older). All new models like iPad Pro and Air with M1/M2 processors and iPad 10 support the new feature.
  • More accurate auto-correction. The story here is the same as on the iPhone: most languages will be supported on all system-compatible devices, but English, French and Spanish will work on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (fifth generation), 11-inch iPad Pro (third generation), iPad 10, iPad Air 4, iPad mini 6 and newer models.
  • FaceTime on Apple TV. With iPadOS 17, you can use the iPad camera to FaceTime conversations via Apple TV. But the feature will only work on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (third generation), 11-inch iPad Pro (any version), iPad 8, iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5 and newer. You will also need a second-generation Apple 4K TV.
  • Safe distance from the screen. To protect the user's eyesight, iPadOS will learn to warn when he holds the tablet too close to his face, and will advise you to keep a distance of about 30 centimeters. However, this requires a TrueDepth camera — which means that the function will work only on third-generation Pro models or newer.
  • Support for external cameras. iPadOS 17 allows you to connect an external camera for use in video calls. You can even use the built-in camera from Studio Display. But the feature only works on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro (third generation), 11-inch iPad Pro (first generation), iPad 10, iPad Air 4, iPad mini 6 and newer models.
  • Auto-complete PDF. The ability to quickly add your name, address or other information to documents will require at least an iPad 7, an 11-inch iPad Pro (second generation) or a 12.9-inch iPad Pro (fourth generation).
  • Smart Siri queries. The new version of the system will allow Siri to ask consecutive questions, and the assistant will "keep in mind" the context of the conversation. But not on the iPad 6/7, 12.9-inch iPad Pro (second generation) and iPad Air 3.

  • Game mode. As the name suggests, the feature will boost your computer's performance while playing. To do this, the system will limit resources for background tasks. This will only work on computers with Apple Silicon.
  • A quick Siri call. In iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, the user will no longer have to greet the assistant: it is enough to say Siri's name for her to respond. But if you have a Mac with an Intel processor, you'll have to say "Hi, Siri" the old-fashioned way.
  • Presentation overlay. A new mode that allows you to add a webcam image on top of the presentation when showing the screen. Again, exclusively on M1 and M2 computers.
  • Support for hearing aids Made for iPhone. The function speaks for itself: if your hearing aid is certified to work with an iPhone, it will also connect to a Mac — but only if you have a model with an M2 processor.

All these OS updates are currently available only in beta format and are not recommended for installation on personal devices.
