Everyone who uses modern sports watches, be it Garmin, TIMEX, Suunto and others, say that something is wrong with them. It is especially difficult for those who switch to them from mobile apps. There is some inexplicable feeling that we are all at the stage in which all cell phone owners were before the advent of the iPhone — we had Motorola clamshells, strange Ericsson communicators, premium Nokia phones… But the iPhone appeared and everything changed — we don't understand how we used this garbage. And all the phones became like the very first iPhone.
Watch manufacturers are releasing new models, but there are no attempts to break the ice and release a device that will set a new quality standard. It will become a benchmark. In the new concept from TomTom, which is likely to become a product this year, there are many features of the "brand new device" that we are all waiting for.
What do we like about an unreleased and generally not yet understood device:
Universal control. As in the iPhone there were no buttons except on/off, Home and volume, so here all control is done with one joystick button. Tired of all these buttons that are strewn with modern watches!
Universal form factor. A watch is just a brick that fits into a strap of any color and any size. Perhaps he will stand in a special mount on a bicycle or in a mount on the cap of a swimmer or triathlete. it is thanks to the simplicity of the form that the iPhone has acquired a huge number of accessories, because of which the consumer often chose this particular phone.
Graphic screen. We don't need a full-color screen! We are running in a sweat along forest trails, we are pedaling frantically or swimming looking into the depths of the water and we are definitely not up to the screen. But we want to see the data on the screen in a pleasant way, and not as on a programmable calculator of the 20th century! In TomTom, everything looks very nice in this sense.
Friendliness to modern sports services. Yes, TrainingPeaks is a fancy service for TIMEX, but it is written in poor Adobe Flex (like Flash) and its interface smacks of Windows 3.11. Garmin makes its service, but it is morally outdated. Why do manufacturers tie us to their services if they are not the best choice for us? After all, it is clear to everyone that the best are Strava, RunKeeper and Endomondo! The creators of TomTom GPS Sport Watches promise to be friends with everyone and this cannot but please.
