Not so long ago, a reader of Life Hacker Artem Moskovenko sent advice about translating the interface into English to replenish the vocabulary. Indeed, this rather simple solution allows you to significantly replenish your vocabulary and immerse yourself in the language environment, which is even more important.
Today we offer a new life hack — business and budget management in English. Perhaps it will seem unnecessarily difficult and unaffordable, because many people think that their vocabulary is insufficient for such a radical transition. But in fact, everything is much simpler.
The first thing we need to do is to determine how many words (approximately) we know. To do this, you can use the excellent service that was mentioned in the Hackradar. Even if you got a very small number, do not despair! After all, now you know exactly where you are and where you should strive.
The second is to adopt a number of simple rules:
– Tasks, notes, budget and calendar meetings should preferably be recorded using the most commonly used words and expressions in English, and the most appropriate in meaning in the field of business correspondence, and not colloquial speech.
– If you don't remember or don't know how to translate a word or expression from Russian into English, then you need to use a dictionary.
– If you don't have a dictionary at hand in a situation of mobile access to daily records, then it is allowed to write unfamiliar words in Russian.
– If you have written something in Russian, then at the first review it is necessary to translate a word or expression into English.
– If you do not know how to translate a word into English, then be sure to put this word in vocabulary cards for further memorization.
These rules are quite easy to follow. It is only important to keep English-Russian dictionaries of general and, necessarily, business vocabulary always at hand, that is, on the communicator. Advantages of this approach:
– Almost complete immersion in the language environment in everyday life for text formats.
– A quick set of the necessary vocabulary, because we essentially put ourselves in the “terrain of death”.
– No problems with encodings in any available applications, both when entering data and when synchronizing.
– Saving time to create a category in almost all budget management programs, in almost all cases the program already has the most frequently used categories.
– Comparative simplicity of search queries due to the fact that there are fewer word forms in the English language.
The disadvantages of the approach are two — the complexity of working on this system during the first two to four weeks and the need to write in parentheses on tasks and meetings in Russian for delegated tasks. But with the correct application of this system, the results will not be long in coming! Try to conduct business and budget this way for a couple of months, enter unfamiliar words in the cards and check your vocabulary again on the service that we mentioned at the beginning of the article, and we hope that the result will surprise you!
